That small piece of material determines almost everything that follows: how difficult the cut will be, how much finished weight you can recover, how clean the gem will look, how well it may polish, and whether the finished stone has enough value to justify the time.
A good piece makes it feel easy.
A bad piece of rough can make you think you are failing, when in reality, the material was the problem from the beginning.

What Is "Rough"?
Rough is a natural material suitable for cutting into a faceted gem.
That sounds obvious, but it matters.
Not every pretty stone is good faceting rough. Some material is better for cabochons. Some are better for carving. Some is better left as a specimen.
Good faceting rough usually has:
• Enough transparency or translucency to return light
• Enough depth for pavilion angles
• Good color
• Manageable inclusions
• Limited fractures
• Good shape for yield
• Suitable hardness and durability
• Known or trustworthy identity
• Reasonable cost for the cutter’s skill level
A beginner should not start with the rarest stone they can afford.
A beginner should start with a rough that gives them a high probability of finishing a stone.

Natural vs Lab-Created Faceting Rough
Before choosing specific stones, it helps to understand the two major categories: natural rough and lab-created rough.
Both can be valuable. Both can be beautiful. Both can produce excellent finished gemstones. They simply solve different problems.
Natural Faceting Rough
Natural rough comes from the earth.
Its value is tied to rarity, origin, color, clarity, size, and natural formation.
Natural material often carries stronger collector appeal and higher market prestige, especially when the species is rare or the origin matters.
Natural rough also brings more variability.
It may have fractures, color zoning, inclusions, healed veils, cleavage issues, unexpected internal stress, or shape problems that reduce yield. That does not make it bad. It just means natural rough demands more judgment.
Natural rough is best when you want:
• Rarity
• Origin story
• Collector value
• Natural inclusions and character
• Higher-end jewelry potential
• Material with geological identity
Natural rough is harder when you need:
• Predictable clarity
• Predictable yield
• Low-cost practice
• Consistent color
• Repeatable beginner results
You'll often have more mistakes, less yield, and more skill needed to produce high-quality gemstones from natural materials.
Lab-Created Faceting Rough
Lab-created rough is grown under controlled conditions.
It is not fake by default. A lab-created sapphire is still corundum. A lab-created ruby is still corundum. A lab-created alexandrite, when properly grown as synthetic chrysoberyl, is still the same mineral species as natural alexandrite.
The origin is different, but the material can still be optically and technically excellent.
Lab-created rough is often ideal for learning because it can be cleaner, more consistent, more affordable, and less emotionally painful to ruin. It also opens the door to colors and materials that would be extremely expensive in natural form.
Lab-created rough is best when you want:
• Practice material
• Consistency
• Lower cost
• Strong color
• Clean stones
• Larger finished gems
• Predictable cutting behavior
• Accessible consumer-facing jewelry
Lab-created rough is harder when you need:
• Natural rarity
• Origin prestige
• Collector-grade natural value
• One-of-one geological character
The practical lesson is this: Natural rough carries rarity. Lab-created rough carries access.
There is this perspective with industrial jewelers, such as the ones you find in shopping malls, that lab stones are not worth anything.
Highly untrue, in reality, it's just difficult to mark up a lab stone to the degree that you can with a natural stone in a generic setting. Lab-grown stones that have high degrees of craftsmanship can and will command high values.
The only question is whether you can bring that value out in the stone.

How to Inspect Before You Cut
The biggest missing skill for many beginners is rough evaluation.
A list of good stones helps, but it does not replace the ability to look at a piece of rough and ask, “Is this actually worth cutting?”
Use the following checks before committing material to the machine.
1. Confirm the Identity
Know what the material is supposed to be.
A beginner does not need a full gem lab at home, but you should still buy from quality sources that vet and identify the material and distinguish natural, synthetic, treated, imitation, and simulant stones.
Do not buy mystery rough expecting premium results.
Mystery material is practice material until proven otherwise. There's nothing wrong with that, but when you're ready to produce something of value, you need to pay to play.
2. Check Color in Multiple Lighting Conditions
Color is one of the biggest drivers of value.
Look at the rough under daylight, indoor light, and strong direct light. Some stones shift dramatically. Some darken after cutting. Some look exciting wet but too dark once finished. Some show color zoning that may need careful orientation.
For color-change materials like alexandrite, color-change sapphire, or color-change garnet, lighting is not optional. It is the entire point.
A beautiful rough stone can still cut an ugly gem if the color is poorly placed or too dark in the final design.
3. Look for Fractures
Fractures are not just visual flaws.
They can become structural failure points during cutting, polishing, transfer, setting, or wear. A fracture near the edge may chip out. A fracture through the center may force you to cut a smaller stone than expected. A fracture that reaches the surface may trap polish or open during cutting.
Use bright light and magnification. Specifically, a loupe with 20-30x magnification for most things works just fine. If you've never used one, it may take you some time to get used to.
Rotate the stone slowly. Look for internal lines, reflective planes, cloudy breaks, stress marks, open seams, and cracks that continue through the rough.
Some inclusions can stay. Fractures are usually more dangerous.
4. Check Clarity and Inclusions
Inclusions are internal features inside the stone.
Not all inclusions are fatal. Some are acceptable. Some are beautiful. Some prove natural origin. Some reduce value. Some destroy cutting options.
The key question is location.
An inclusion near the edge may be removed during preforming. An inclusion under the table may dominate the finished stone. A veil may be tolerable in a pendant gem but unacceptable in a precision-cut collector stone.
Beginners should start with cleaner rough because fewer internal problems mean fewer variables, allowing you to focus on learning proper techniques.

5. Evaluate Shape
Shape controls yield.
Blocky, chunky, rounded, or well-proportioned rough generally gives better recovery. Flat, twisted, thin, tabular, deeply pitted, or awkwardly shaped rough can waste a lot of weight.
This is one of the most important beginner lessons:
A heavier piece of rough is not always a better piece of rough.
A 10-carat piece of poorly shaped rough may yield a smaller finished gem than a 6-carat piece with better proportions.
6. Understand Your Yield
Yield is the amount of finished gemstone you recover from the original rough.
You will not get a 10-carat finished stone from a 10-carat piece of rough.
Material is lost to sawing, grinding, preforming, cutting the pavilion, cutting the crown, removing inclusions, adjusting shape, polishing, and correcting mistakes.
Beginners should expect yield loss, depending on the stone. Sometimes that means up to 80-90%
That is not failure. That is just faceting.
The goal is not to preserve every gram. The goal is to cut the best stone that the rough can reasonably become. That's where the true value hides.
7. Cut or Polish a Window
A window is a small flat polished area on the rough that lets you see inside the stone more clearly.
This can reveal color, zoning, fractures, inclusions, transparency, and whether the material is worth faceting.
A window can be extremely useful, but it is also destructive. You are removing material, changing the shape, and potentially affecting yield.
Do not cut a window into material you do not own.
Do not over-window small rough. Do not assume every stone needs one.
A beginner-friendly window check looks like this:
• Choose a small area that will likely be removed or incorporated into the preform
• Grind a flat spot
• Pre-polish or polish enough to see inside
• Inspect under strong light with your loupe
• Rotate the stone and study depth, color, and flaws
• Decide whether to facet, cab, carve, or reject the material
While not every stone requires a window, many do not.
I highly recommend the practice as even some of the clearest stones, such as topaz, can return nearly invisible inclusions mid-cut.
8. Match the Rough to the Cut
Do not choose a diagram before understanding the rough.
A round brilliant may be a common beginner design, but not every piece of rough wants to become a round. Some materials are better for ovals, cushions, emerald cuts, step cuts, trillions, pears, or custom designs.
The rough decides what is possible.
The design decides what is efficient.
The cutter (you) needs to balance both.
Safety: Not Every Cool Stone Belongs on Your Bench
Some stones are hazardous because of dust, chemistry, radioactivity, treatment, or mineral content.
However, this does not mean every named material is dangerous in normal finished jewelry.
Always use wet cutting. Manage & clean up slurry. Avoid dry sweeping. Wear proper eye protection.
Always use respiratory protection when dust exposure is possible. Research unknown materials before cutting.
Be especially cautious with:
• Irradiated gemstones from unknown or unverified sources
• Collector minerals marketed as “radioactive” or fluorescent novelty stones
• Asbestos-associated materials such as tiger’s eye, pietersite, certain serpentine materials, and related fibrous minerals
• Copper-bearing materials such as malachite and chrysocolla
• Arsenic-bearing materials such as orpiment, realgar, or so-called bumblebee jasper
• Cinnabar and other mercury-bearing minerals
• Any mystery rough sold without identity or treatment disclosure
If a stone glows, changes color, looks exotic, or has a dramatic trade name, that does not automatically make it safe to cut.
Tier 1: Beginner Faceting Rough
Beginner faceting rough should be affordable, available, forgiving, and capable of teaching the machine.
The goal is not maximum value. The goal is finishing stones.
Beginner Natural Rough
1. Quartz: Amethyst, Citrine, Smoky Quartz, Clear
Quartz is one of the most common beginner faceting materials.
It is available, recognizable, affordable, and durable enough for jewelry. Amethyst and citrine also carry strong search value because customers know the names.
Pros:
• Affordable
• Available in many colors
• Good hardness for practice
Cons:
• Can be frustrating to polish
• Natural rough may have fractures
• Transparent stones reveal mistakes clearly
2. Beryl: Aquamarine, Goshenite, Golden Beryl
Beryl can be useful when the rough is affordable and clean.
Aquamarine has strong name recognition, while goshenite can be a lower-cost way to practice with the beryl structure.
Pros:
• Good hardness
• Recognizable gemstone family
• Aquamarine has strong consumer appeal
Cons:
• Better material can become expensive
• Pale rough may cut washed-out stones
• Inclusions and fractures matter

3. Tourmaline
Tourmaline is often recommended for beginners, but it sits near the edge of beginner and intermediate.
It comes in many colors and can produce beautiful gems. It also introduces pleochroism, orientation, and color zoning, which makes it more complex than basic quartz.
Pros:
• Huge color range
• Strong gemstone identity
• Excellent progression material
Cons:
• Orientation matters
• Some crystals are long, thin, or yield-poor
Lab-Created Rough
1. Synthetic Spinel
Synthetic spinel is one of the most useful practice materials for faceting.
It is affordable, consistent, available in many colors, and generally less painful to ruin than natural gemstones.
Pros:
• Available in many colors
• Good for practicing meets
• Good for learning Polish control
Cons:
• Lower natural rarity story
• Finished stones may be viewed as practice or fashion gems
• Not the same resale profile as natural stones
2. Cubic Zirconia
Cubic zirconia, or CZ, is a common lab-created faceting material with strong brilliance.
It can be useful for beginners because it is inexpensive and visually rewarding when cut well. In fact, this is the exact material I used to practice my oval cuts.
Pros:
• Affordable
• Brightly finished stones
• Widely available
• Good for practicing brilliance-based designs
• Strong visual feedback
Cons:
• Dense material, so size and weight can surprise beginners
• Different feel than quartz or natural gems
• Lower prestige than natural gemstones
• Can encourage unrealistic expectations about brilliance
CZ is useful for learning how faceting geometry can create dramatic light return.

3. Synthetic & Volcanic Glass
It allows beginners to practice facet behavior with fewer natural flaws, making it useful before moving into natural quartz materials
Pros:
• More consistent
• Low cost of failure
• Useful for practicing meet points
Cons:
• Still may have polishing quirks
• Not all glass is created equal
Tier 2: Intermediate Faceting Rough
Intermediate rough introduces more value, stronger optical decisions, and more material-specific behavior.
This is where the cutter begins moving from “Can I finish a stone?” to “Can I choose the right stone and cut it well?”
Intermediate Natural Rough
1. Garnet: Almandine, Pyrope, Rhodolite
Garnet is a strong intermediate material because it is durable, recognizable, and popular in jewelry. Some garnets are affordable enough for practice, while others become high-value quickly.
Pros:
• Good jewelry durability
• Recognizable birthstone
• Available in wide varieties
Cons:
• Dark material can cut more black
• Better varieties can be expensive
• Lots of international market competition
2. Peridot
Peridot is a classic faceting material with a distinctive green color. It is popular, recognizable, and slightly more demanding than quartz-based stones.
Pros:
• Strong color identity
• Good consumer recognition
• Birthstone relevance
Cons:
• Can be pressure-sensitive
• Can chip if handled poorly
• Better color costs more
3. Topaz
Topaz is valuable to understand, but it must be handled with respect because of its cleavage. It can produce beautiful gems, especially blue, white, imperial, champagne, and other colors. It's a good "level 2" stone to grow into after learning the basics.
Pros:
• Popular jewelry material
• Blue topaz has high recognition
Cons:
• Cleavage risk
• Some colors are treatment-dependent
• Irradiated blue topaz requires reputable sourcing
Topaz teaches the cutter that hardness and toughness are not the same thing.

Intermediate Lab-Created Rough
1. Synthetic Corundum: Lab Sapphire and Lab Ruby
Synthetic corundum is an excellent progression material. This is specifically regarding the flame-fused corundum; it's necessary to practice here before moving up to the real deal or more premium Czochralski corundum.
It is hard, durable, available in all the colors of the rainbow, and extremely popular in jewelry.
Pros:
• Durable
• Strong jewelry appeal
• Excellent color options
• Good for serious practice
Cons:
• Harder material takes more patience
• Polishing is more demanding
• Cheap material quality varies
• Requires quality laps and technique
2. YAG and GGG
YAG and GGG are synthetic garnet-type materials used as gem simulants and technical crystals. The more research you do on them, the stranger they sound. But they are interesting faceting materials because they offer strong optical properties and consistency. As well as rising in popularity over the last few years. Great for cutters who want to explore precision synthetic materials beyond usual stones.
Pros:
• Strong optical performance
• Useful for precision practice
Cons:
• Less familiar to the general market
• Not a natural gemstone romance
• Availability is hard to find.
Tier 3: Advanced Faceting Rough
Higher Risk. Higher Reward.
Advanced rough increases the cost of failure.
These materials may be more expensive, harder, more brittle, more included, more directional, more treatment-sensitive, or more demanding to polish.
Advanced Natural Rough
1. Sapphire and Ruby
As we already covered, sapphire and ruby are corundum.
They are hard, durable, valuable, and central to fine jewelry.
Quality specimens are also costly enough that beginners should not start here unless they are willing to take a 100% yield loss.

Pros:

• Strong customer demand
• Birthstone and bridal relevance
Cons:
• Hard material takes time
• Inclusions can be a nightmare
• Heat treatment disclosure matters significantly
• Require a high-quality polish.
2. Zircon
If you're looking to practice brilliance, many can even come close to zircon. It can produce brilliant finished stones with strong dispersion. Not to be confused with cubic zirconia. Aircon is a real, naturally occurring gemstone with its own heritage.
Pros:
• High brilliance (strong fire)
• Natural gemstone appeal
• Good collector interest
Cons:
• brittle AF
• Can show doubling
• Polishing can be demanding
• Treatment is extremely common
3. Emerald
Emerald is technically beryl, but it does not belong with the beginner beryl rough we discussed earlier. Emerald is commonly highly included, often treated, and a high-value material that requires careful handling and disclosure.
Pros:
• High market value
• Strong historical identity
• Powerful green color
• Premium jewelry relevance
Cons:
• Inclusions are common and sometimes desired
• Fractures can be serious
• Treatment disclosure matters
• Not forgiving at all
Selling an emerald to someone who wants to set it in white gold. You're asking for a cranky client, speaking from experience.
Emeralds are nearly a master craft stone, setting them in jewelry, especially so. White gold generally requires more "persuasion" than the stones can typically take. You'll need to warranty your work; that one is not worth the headaches.
Advanced Lab-Created Rough
1. Czochralski Sapphire and Ruby
Still lab-grown but different. Czochralski-grown sapphire and ruby can be excellent synthetic faceting materials.
High-quality pulled crystals can produce extremely clean, vibrant stones that are useful for precision cutting and jewelry.
Pros:
• High clarity
• Strong color
• Durable material
• Can produce beautiful finished stones
Cons:
• Harder to cut and polish than beginner materials
• Better lab material costs significantly more
I've only encountered a handful of situations where I've needed Czochralski-grown sapphires. More often than not, the flame-fused ones are generally more than sufficient when looking for non-natural options.
2. Synthetic Moissanite
Okay, I feel like even having this in here does a little bit of a disservice to all the other incredible stones here. Moissanite is extremely brilliant and very hard.
It is widely used in jewelry and has strong consumer recognition, arguably as one of the most popular stones in the market, especially as a diamond alternative.
Pros:
• Very high brilliance
• Excellent durability
• High perceived value in finished jewelry
Cons:
• Very hard
• Polishing is demanding
• Lots of market competition

3. Lab-Created Alexandrite
One of my personal favorites, lab-created alexandrite, is a powerful material for education and jewelry.
High-quality pulled crystal material can produce strong visual appeal and color-change behavior at a fraction of the natural cost. Flame-fused alternatives produce lighter, more delicate, gentle color tones & shift.
It does not replace the rarity of natural alexandrite but provides accessibility to many who would be unable to afford it otherwise.
Pros:
• Strong consumer perception
• Color-change appeal
• Much more accessible than natural alexandrite
• Excellent value when cut well
Cons:
• Quality varies significantly
• Must distinguish pulled Czochralski from flame-fused
• rarity is not the same
• Color change may differ from fine natural stones

Tier 4: Mastercraft-Level Faceting Rough
Master-level rough is not just difficult.
It carries consequences, and they will persist until skill improves.
This is material where rarity, value, sourcing, orientation, and disclosure matter as much as cutting skill.
1. Natural Alexandrite
Natural alexandrite is one of the most famous color-change gemstones.
Fine material is rare, expensive, and highly valued. It must be evaluated under multiple lighting conditions, and finished value depends heavily on color change, clarity, size, origin, and cut.
Pros:
• Extreme rarity (prestige)
• Strong collector demand
• Powerful story
• High jewelry value
Cons:
• Extremely expensive
• Difficult sourcing

A practical progression might look like this:
Stage 1: Learn the Machine
Learn indexing, angles, meet points, pre-polish, and final polish.
Stage 2: Learn Natural Variation
Learn inclusions, color zoning, tone, orientation, and natural rough behavior.
Stage 3: Learn Value Protection
Learn cleavage awareness, harder materials, treatment disclosure, and higher-value cutting decisions.
Stage 4: Learn Master-Level Judgment
Preserve value, rarity, optical performance, and customer trust.
Where Tools Fit Into Rough Selection
Choosing rough is only the first decision.
Once the material is selected, the workflow has to protect it.
Faceting depends on repeatability. The stone needs to be held securely, aligned cleanly, transferred accurately, and inspected honestly. Dopping and transfer issues can ruin good rough just as quickly as poor material selection can.
That is where a complete faceting workflow starts to matter.
The rough is the input.
The system is how you protect it.
