Traditional lapidary equipment works. That was never the problem. The problem was what came with it: expense, weight, permanent installation, and a footprint large enough to consume a small workshop.
Many modern makers do not work in one discipline. We cut stones, carve materials, clean castings, engrave components, prototype fixtures, polish jewelry, and then need the same bench for something else tomorrow. I needed equipment that worked the same way: compact enough to store, stable enough to use seriously, modular enough to change with the job, and capable enough that saving space did not mean accepting a toy.
It started as a tool for my own bench
The Cut 'n Cab did not begin as a formal product-development project. I was learning lapidary, building jewelry, and expanding my workshop. I encountered the same choice many newcomers do: buy an expensive dedicated cabbing machine or improvise.
I was not willing to give that much money and bench space to a heavy, specialized machine. I began with a compact variable-speed bench motor and built a removable housing to control water, contain slurry, support abrasive tooling, and turn that motor into a useful wet-grinding platform. The machine needed to go on the bench when needed and come off when it was not. No permanent mounting pins. No workstation one machine owned forever.
The MakerSpace Edition came first
The first version was closer to today's Cut 'n Cab V2 MakerSpace Edition. It was not built exclusively around cabochon production; it was meant to support the mix of abrasive and fabrication work happening in my shop. The current MakerSpace Edition combines a wet-grinding housing with an integrated saw table, variable-speed control, active water cooling, drainage, and interchangeable tooling.

That range matters because a wet grinder is useful for much more than cabochons. With the right tooling, the platform can trim and shape lapidary material, grind cabochon preforms, refine stone carving, clean cast jewelry components, smooth small metal and composite parts, engrave hard materials, polish jewelry, and test fixtures or prototype processes.
Changing wheels between grits is practical when you cut occasionally, work across several disciplines, or value flexibility. It becomes less attractive when you repeatedly move between coarse shaping, scratch removal, pre-polish, and final polish. That is where the Carbon Pro entered the story.
Why the Carbon Pro exists
Scratch removal is one of the least forgiving parts of cabochon making. A deep scratch from early grinding can survive through several stages before it becomes obvious, and the dependable fix is usually to return to a coarser abrasive and work forward again.
Repeated wheel changes interrupted that process. The solution was to mirror the MakerSpace wet-grinding side. The Cut 'n Cab V2 Carbon Pro became a compact, dual-sided cabbing system for users who want multiple abrasives mounted and ready at the same time. Its carbon-fiber-reinforced housings, controlled water delivery, integrated drainage, removable bench mounting, abrasive adapters, and six-inch wheel support serve a focused stone-shaping, grinding, and polishing workflow.

Carbon Pro or MakerSpace Edition?
Choose the Carbon Pro when cabbing is central
Dual wet-grinding housings keep several grinding and polishing wheels mounted, reducing changes and making it easier to step back when a scratch survives. It suits dedicated cabochon work, frequent grit progressions, batch processing, lapidary instruction, jewelry studios that cut their own stones, and small production work where setup changes cost time.
Choose the MakerSpace Edition when the process changes
The MakerSpace Edition is the broader workshop system. Its saw table and interchangeable wet-grinding tooling suit makers moving among lapidary, jewelry, carving, casting cleanup, engraving, and small-part fabrication. It is useful in small or shared studios, jewelry benches, and workshops where every square inch has to justify itself.
The MakerSpace Edition is not a lesser cabbing machine. It makes a different trade: the Carbon Pro reduces transitions within a dedicated abrasive process, while the MakerSpace Edition expands the number of processes the platform can support.
One platform, different workflows
The motor is the platform. The surrounding system should adapt to the work.
Traditional equipment often ties motor, housing, water system, tooling, and work surface into one fixed machine. That can make an excellent dedicated tool, but it duplicates expensive components whenever another process is added. The Cut 'n Cab treats housings, mounting hardware, abrasive adapters, water controls, drains, and accessories as parts of a configurable system.
- Your bench remains usable: secure the machine for a job, then remove or reposition it when the work changes.
- Your abrasive system can change: choose wheel types, blades, burrs, polishing tools, and accessories without being locked into one factory configuration.
- Your system can grow: start with basic capability, then add tooling, fixtures, extraction, or faster accessory changes as your work develops.

Modular does not mean unfinished
Modularity can be used as an excuse to leave important problems for the customer. That is not the objective here. A modular machine still needs to be stable, controlled, serviceable, and understandable. Development moved from asking whether the concept worked to asking how it should be secured, how vibration should be controlled, how wheel spacing and water delivery should work, how runoff should be contained, and which parts should remain universal or process-specific.

Real workshop use drove the refinements. Mounting evolved so the machine could remain stable without becoming permanent. Housings and spacers were revised to improve fit, alignment, wheel compatibility, and vibration control. Adapters made common one-inch lapidary wheels practical. A quick-change centering nut gained a hand tool because mechanical function is not automatically ergonomic. When dry jewelry and fabrication workflows expanded, adapting the drain outlet to a shop vacuum created a practical extraction option.
None of those developments began as marketing exercises. They began with someone at a bench saying, “This works, but this part could work better.”
Lowering the barrier without lowering the standard
Accessibility is not making the cheapest possible tool. A machine that vibrates excessively, cannot control water, uses incompatible abrasives, or becomes disposable when one component fails does not truly lower a barrier; it moves the cost somewhere else.
The objective is to reduce the total burden of entering and continuing the trade: purchase cost, bench space, tool duplication, installation difficulty, storage, expandability, repairability, consumable availability, workflow flexibility, and access to support. A compact lapidary machine should not require a permanent studio, and a modular wet grinder should not become useless when its maker changes disciplines.
A machine that can grow with the maker
The MakerSpace Edition asks how much useful workshop capability can fit into one compact, configurable platform. The Carbon Pro asks how efficiently that platform can support a focused cabbing workflow. They are not competing answers to one question; they are two branches of the same system.
The Cut 'n Cab exists because traditional equipment did not fit the way I worked. It continues to improve because other makers used it, challenged it, and explained what needed to work better. It began on a crowded bench with a problem that needed solving. It is still evolving from there.
