In the beginning, every rock will teach you something.
Sometimes they teach you patience. Sometimes it teaches you pressure control. Sometimes it teaches you that the scratch you ignored at 600 grit was not going to magically disappear at 1200.
That is the part most beginners run into first: cabbing looks simple until the stone starts keeping score.
A cabochon is only a smooth, domed stone on the surface. Underneath that finished shape is a sequence of decisions: stone selection, trimming, dopping, shaping, sanding, water control, inspection, pre-polish, final polish, and cleanup. When one of those steps goes wrong, the mistake usually shows up later.
The good news is that most beginner cabbing problems are not mysterious. They are usually process problems. Once you learn how to diagnose them, you can fix them faster and avoid repeating them on better material.
This guide walks through the most common beginner cabbing mistakes, why they happen, what they look like, and how to correct them.
Mistake 1: Starting with the Wrong Stone
Okay, to be upfront, this was me.. It's easy to pick the wrong stone to start practicing on.
usually goes like this...finds a stone that looks beautiful and assumes it will make a beautiful cabochon. Sometimes it will. Sometimes it will crumble, fracture, undercut, overheat, or refuse to polish.
A good beginner stone should be stable, thick enough to shape, and relatively free of major fractures. Agate, jasper, many quartz varieties, and solid pieces of petrified wood are common learning materials because they are durable, available, and capable of taking a good polish.
If your material has any of these qualities, you may want to reconsider.
• Open fractures
• Crumbly edges
• Soft pockets
• Mixed hardness zones
• Thin
• Porous texture
• Heavy internal cracks
• Weak backing material
• Unknown composition
A beginner can still practice on imperfect stones. In fact, it is useful to become familiar with both poor- and good-quality materials. But if every stone breaks, chips, or refuses to polish, the issue may not be your hands.
Before cutting, inspect the stone dry and wet. Look for cracks, pits, soft zones, and changes in texture. Tap lightly and listen for hidden fractures. Avoid starting with rare, expensive, or sentimental material until your process is reliable.
Save opal, high-grade turquoise, sapphire cabochon rough, star stones, and thin boulder opal for later. Those materials are not impossible. They simply punish bad process faster.

Mistake 2: Cutting Too Close to the Final Shape
You may be tempted to use your rock saw to shape or grind your exact profile shape, right when you get on the lap.
That seems efficient, and in some ways, it is… but it removes your margin for correction. If the saw wanders, the stone chips, or the pattern looks different after trimming, there is no room left to adjust.
Give yourself some breathing room during the rough stage, you can always remove more, but you can't put it back.
The outline you draw is not a finish line. It is a target. The grinding stage is where the final shape becomes clean.
Trim slightly outside the line. Leave enough material to true the shape on the grinding wheel. If the stone has strong patterning, let the pattern guide the outline instead of forcing every stone into a perfect oval.
This matters especially with scenic jasper, plume jasper, moss agate, boulder opal, and petrified wood. Sometimes the best cabochon is not the most symmetrical one. It is the one that preserves the strongest part of the stone.

Mistake 3: Poor Dopping
Dopping is the process of attaching a stone to a stick so you can control it while shaping and polishing. This process is pretty typical across both cabbing and faceting workflows.
What they also share is that a bad dop bond can ruin the entire experience.
The stone may pop off. It may sit crooked. It may wobble. It may cure at the wrong angle. It may be too close to the dop to shape the edge cleanly. Or it may hold just long enough to fail when you start applying pressure.
Dopping problems usually come from:
• Dirty stone backs
• Weak adhesive bond
• Wax that was too cold
• Wax that overheated the stone
• Epoxy that was not fully cured
• Misaligned placement
• Too little surface contact
• Too much pressure too early
• Poor staging during cure
Traditional wax dopping works well when done properly. It has a long history in lapidary because it is fast, adjustable, and removable with heat. But it does require temperature control and practice.
Epoxy dopping can be easier for many cabbing workflows because cabochons do not usually require the same precision transfer demands as faceted stones. For cabbing, epoxy can give a strong bond, reduce heat exposure during setup, and work well with polycarbonate dop sticks.
Clean the back of the stone before dopping. Make sure the surface is dry. If using wax, warm the stone and wax correctly and build a supportive wax collar. If using epoxy, give it enough cure time before grinding.
Use a dop stick holder or magnetic dop tray to keep stones upright while the adhesive cures. This prevents shifting, tipping, and accidental bench chaos.
For small stones, dopping is not optional heroism. It is control. It keeps fingers away from the wheel and gives you better leverage over the dome.

Mistake 4: Skipping Grit Stages
Hard stop. Don't skim over this; this is a big one.
Most bad polishes are not actually polishing problems. They are sanding problems that survived long enough to haunt you after a long day at the grinder.
Each grit exists to remove the scratches from the previous grit. If you skip a stage or move on too early, the deeper scratches stay in the stone. Once you reach polish, those scratches are still there. They are just shinier now.
This is why beginners often say:
• “The polish is not working.”
• “The stone still looks scratched.”
• “The surface looks cloudy.”
• “I polished forever and nothing changed.”
• “The cab looked fine when wet, then awful when dry.”
That last one matters. Water hides scratches. Extremely well.
A wet cabochon can look ready long before it actually is; you can confidently get all the way to the end. Then, the next morning, when your stones are dry, you're left confused as to why they're not glossy anymore.
Dry the stone between stages and inspect it under strong light. Rotate the stone. Look from multiple angles. Use magnification.
A practical method is to change the sanding direction slightly between stages. If the old scratches run one direction and the new scratches run another, it becomes easier to see whether you actually removed the previous grit marks.
Mistake 5: Trying to Polish Out Deep Scratches
An extension of mistake 4, just in case you missed it.
Final polish is not a rescue operation
Polish reveals the quality of the surface you already created. It does not erase deep grinding marks, flat spots, pits, or skipped-grit damage.
If you reach final polish and see any quality issues, the correct move is usually to go backward. That feels painful, but it is faster than wasting another hour trying to polish damage that should have been removed earlier.
Diagnose the depth of the scratch.
If the scratch is deep and visible from the coarse shaping stage, go back several grits. If it is a fine haze, you may only need to return to pre-polish. If it appears only under magnification, you may need a more careful final sanding stage before polishing.
Do not keep polishing just because you are emotionally committed to being done.
Speaking from experience, the stone doesn't care.
Mistake 6: Uneven Domes and Flat Spots
A cabochon dome should feel intentional.
Beginners often create flat shoulders, lopsided curves, high centers, uneven edges, or dead zones where the dome stops flowing. This usually happens from holding the stone in one position too long or failing to roll the cab evenly across the wheel.
A good dome is not just rounded. It is balanced.
Common dome problems include:
• One side higher than the other
• Flat top
• Flat shoulder near the edge
• Edge too thin
• Dome too steep
• Dome too shallow
• Oval that becomes lopsided
• Freeform that looks accidental instead of designed
Inspect the cabochon from the side, not just the face.
The face tells you the outline. The side tells you the dome.
Keep the stone moving. Roll it gently into the wheel. Work from the edge toward the crown. Rotate often. Stop and inspect before the shape gets away from you.
If you are new, practice on larger stones before tiny ones. Larger cabs give your hands more room to understand the curve.
Mistake 7: Pressing Too Hard
While I've seen both, pressing too softly and too hard, by a landslide, too hard takes the majority. When I started out, I was the too-soft crowd, abrassives were fresh and clean stones cut fast, missing scratches were a thing, but I also was trying to preserve the life of the wheels.
Once I figured out I wasn't getting some scratches out because I wasn't pressing hard enough, the other half of the experience found me. Next thing you know, you've cut some stones, but they're all very poorly done.
Too much pressure can create heat, fractures, undercutting, wheel wear, flat spots, adhesive failure, and loss of control. It can also make the machine feel rougher than it actually is.
The abrasive should do the work. Your hands guide the contact.
Use steady, moderate pressure. Keep the stone moving. Let the wheel cut. If the material is not removing fast enough, the issue may be the grit, the wheel condition, the stone hardness, or the speed, not your muscle output.
Pressure should be deliberate, not desperate.
If you feel yourself fighting the machine, stop and reassess.
For those who want to go fast, my Cut n' Cab collection is going to be more appealing than something like a cab king. Size difference aside, the cut n' cab has a wider range of control over wheel speed, and water flow. If you can put up with the water spray, you can really hog it.
Just be mindful, you will go through abrassives faster, there's a trade off for everything.

Mistake 8: Poor Water Control
Water is a huge part of the cutting system.
It cools the stone, reduces dust, carries away debris, and helps the abrasive work properly. Too little water can create heat and dust. Too much water can make a mess, reduce visibility, or interfere with control.
Poor water management can cause:
• Overheating
• Dust exposure
• Slurry buildup
• Uneven cutting
• Dirty inspection
• Wheel contamination
• Messy bench conditions
• Unsafe electrical conditions
Use enough water to keep the stone and wheel wet without flooding the workspace. Clean slurry before it dries. Do not dry-sweep lapidary dust; if you must vacuum, use a cyclone separator. Wipe wet, rinse often, and keep your water path controlled.
The cleaner the system, the fewer variables the beginner has to fight.
While some front water spray is unavoidable, my cabbing machines have flexible drain hoses. I put mine directly in buckets and have my apron channeled over a bucket.. solves 99% of my clean up.
Mistake 9: Contaminating Finer Grits
Here's one that will surprise you
Just like with food, cross-contamination is sneaky.
If coarse grit or slurry gets onto a finer wheel, sanding disc, polishing pad, towel, or inspection surface, it can re-scratch a stone you thought was almost finished.
It's incredibly frustrating, often after you've checked the stone 100 times, you're sure it was free of scratches, and about to wrap up for the day.
Dip / Rinse the stone between stages. Wash your hands or gloves. Keep towels separated. Do not set a pre-polished cab onto a dirty bench. Keep coarse and fine work zones as separate as your space allows.
If using removable laps, discs, or polishing pads, store them clean. A single coarse particle can ruin a final surface.

Mistake 10: Ignoring Wheel or Abrasive Condition
Sometimes the problem is not the stone.
It is the tool.
Worn wheels, loaded abrasives, contaminated pads, uneven discs, or poorly maintained equipment can make cabbing harder than it needs to be. Beginners often blame themselves because they assume the tool is fine.
But abrasives are consumables. They wear. They load. They change behavior.
Signs of abrasive problems include:
• Slow cutting
• Random scratches
• Uneven surface texture
• Excessive heat
• Poor polish
• Stone bouncing or grabbing
• Surface haze that will not clear
Inspect your wheels and abrasives often. Replace worn components when needed. Use the right grit for the job.
A practical abrasive progression matters because it gives the cutter a known sequence. If each stage has a clear purpose, troubleshooting becomes much easier.

Mistake 11: Bad Final Polish Expectations
Final polish depends on the stone.
Agate, jasper, quartz, lapis lazuli, turquoise, obsidian, opal, and labradorite do not all behave the same. Some take a glassy polish. Some take a softer glow. Some undercut. Some show orange peel. Some need a specific polishing compound. Some need gentler pressure. Some need better pre-polish before they ever see final polish.
A beginner may think every stone should polish like agate. It will not.
If the stone is quartz-based, it may want a different polish than softer porous material. If it is lapis, pyrite and calcite inclusions can behave differently from the blue body. If it is turquoise, treatment and stabilization matter. If it is opal, heat and pressure matter. If it is labradorite, orientation and surface quality matter.
Before blaming the polish, ask:
• Is the stone ready for polish?
• Are all scratches removed?
• Is the surface undercutting?
• Is the compound appropriate?
• Is the pad clean?
• Am I using too much pressure?
• Is the stone overheating?
• Is this material capable of the finish I expect?
A good polish begins before the polishing stage.
The final pass, cerium oxide or tin oxide, depending on the stone type.
Mistake 12: Not Inspecting Under Good Light
Bad lighting creates bad decisions.
A cabochon can look finished under weak shop light and then look scratched the moment it is photographed, set in jewelry, or viewed in sunlight.
This is one of the most common beginner frustrations. The stone looked fine on the machine. Then it looked rough in the listing photo.
That means the inspection process failed.
Use strong directional light. I prefer tripods; I put one right over my shoulder when I cut.
Rotate the stone. Dry it. Inspect the dome, edge, and back. Use magnification when needed.
Look for:
• Scratches
• Pits
• Flats
• Uneven polish
• Edge chips
• Undercutting
• Dome asymmetry
• Residue near the back
• Hazy areas
Inspection is part of the workflow, not the final judgment.
Mistake 13: Jumping Into Expensive Material Too Early
Mixed feelings on this one, but when starting out, it's a good general rule.
Opal, sapphire, ruby, emerald, natural turquoise, high-grade lapis, star stones, and exotic scenic jaspers.
At some point, you'll need to cut one. This isn't me telling you not to do it, just highlighting the risk.
Those stones are not just more expensive. They often require better planning, better pressure control, better orientation, and better finishing habits.
The issue is not whether a beginner is “allowed” to cut them. The issue is probability.
If your process is not consistent on jasper, agate, and quartz, it will not magically become consistent on boulder opal or star sapphire.
Start with forgiving material. Build ten clean cabs. Then move into better material. Then start cutting stones where orientation and value matter.
A smart progression looks like this:
• Jasper and agate for shape control
• Quartz for harder material and scratch discipline
• Petrified wood and scenic jasper for pattern planning
• Labradorite for optical orientation
• Lapis and turquoise for mixed-material behavior
• Opal and sapphire once your process is stable
Skill progression protects your wallet.
Mistake 14: Treating Every Stone Like the Same Shape
Templates are useful. They're suggestions in practice.
Beginners often force stones into standard ovals, rounds, or teardrops even when the material wants something else. This can waste a lot of material, lose color, or remove the best part of the rough.
Cabbing is partly sculpture. You are not just making a shape. You are revealing the stone.
Study the material and patterns before marking. Ask what the stone is offering.
Does the pattern run diagonally? Is there a color pocket near one edge? Is the strongest feature too small for a standard oval? Would a freeform preserve more value? Is the material thick enough for the dome you want?
The best cabs, they show the viewer something the artist wants them to see.
Mistake 15: Working Without a System
See if you can picture this..
The stone is on the bench. The dop sticks are rolling around. The water is inconsistent. The abrasive stages are unclear. The polishing pad is contaminated. The lighting is bad. The slurry is drying. The stone pops off the dop. Nothing is labeled.
How much are you actually learning here? You're fighting the bench.
Build a simple repeatable system.
At minimum:
• Choose the stone
• Mark the shape
• Trim outside the line
• Dop if needed
• Shape the outline
• Build the dome
• Work through each grit
• Rinse between stages
• Inspect dry under good light
• Pre-polish
• Final polish
• Remove from dop
• Finish the back
• Clean the workspace
Back in my Chef'ing days, we said practice mise en place, it's French for "everything in its place." I got tools that help keep your bench organized, but all the tools in the world won't help you if your space is sloppy.
Final Thoughts
Cabbing mistakes are not failures. They're diagnostics.
A scratch tells you where the grit progression broke down. A flat spot tells you where your hand stopped moving. A popped dop tells you the bond was not ready. A dull polish tells you the surface, compound, or material needs to be understood better.
The craft improves when you stop asking, “Why did this go wrong?” and start asking, “At what stage did this become inevitable?”
That is the real troubleshooting mindset.
A clean cabochon is not made at the polishing wheel. It is built through every decision before it.
Choose stable material. Leave room to shape. Dop with intention. Use water. Respect the grit progression. Inspect dry. Keep the bench clean. Do not rush the polish. Do not start with your most expensive stone.
Build the process first.
The finished stones will follow.
