The Ghostwater Agates of the Pacific Northwest
The agates of the Pacific Northwest are unlike anything else on the continent. Their color signatures—milk-blue, glacier-grey, and shifting spectrums of ghosted lavender—don’t come from dyes, impurities, or weathering. They come from the chemistry of ancient, near-pure silica waters that once migrated through volcanic landscapes like slow, mineral-rich smoke.

Most agate color is controlled by trace minerals or iron staining.
Pacific Northwest agates are different.

The iconic ghostly blue comes from Rayleigh light scattering—the same physics that makes the sky blue. Within the agate:

• Ultra-fine fibrous chalcedony strands
• Typically 50–200 nanometers apart
• Scatter shorter (blue) wavelengths of light

The more pure and tightly uniform the silica microstructure, the stronger the ghost-blue effect.

In other words, the color isn’t pigment.
It’s structure. A frozen wavelength of light.
