Uncut gemstones can be found in riverbeds, rock shops, gem shows, estate collections, and online marketplaces.

But once you have a machine, a few tools, and enough curiosity to start cutting, a harder question appears:

How do you know which stone is right for you?

For many beginners, the surprise comes after the initial forum research, YouTube binge, and equipment decisions. The hardware may be easier to choose than the material itself. A stone can look beautiful and still be wrong for your current skill level, your tools, or the project you want to make.

The wrong stone can make lapidary feel harder than it needs to be. It may chip, fracture, undercut, crumble, overheat, refuse to polish, or break just as you start getting a clean shape.

The right stone does the opposite.

It teaches your hands pressure control. It shows you how scratches disappear between grits. It rewards patience. It gives you a finished piece that feels worth keeping, wearing, gifting, or even selling.

Cheap practice material has its place, but cheap does not always mean good for learning. You will eventually discover that you often get what you pay for. That does not mean you should avoid experimenting. Some of my favorite cabbing experiences came from stones that only cost me the fuel it took to go find them.

What Makes a Good Lapidary Stone?

A good lapidary stone is not just beautiful.

It has to survive the process.

When choosing material, look at:

• Hardness
• Fractures
• Inclusions
• Porosity
• Heat sensitivity
• Polish behavior
• Pattern or color
• Thickness
• Jewelry durability
• Market interest

Hardness matters, especially for jewelry. A stone used in a ring or pendant needs to survive handling, setting, and wear. But hardness is not the only factor. A hard stone can still fracture badly. A softer stone can still make a beautiful pendant if it is protected and used correctly.

For beginners, the best materials tend to be stable, affordable, and forgiving.

They should be hard enough to become jewelry, interesting enough to feel rewarding, and available enough that mistakes do not destroy your budget.

That is why agate, jasper, and quartz varieties appear so often in beginner lapidary discussions.

They are not boring.

They are foundational.

The Four-Tier Stone Progression

Think of stone selection as a learning path.

Beginner stones teach shape, pressure, grit progression, and polish.

Intermediate stones teach pattern, orientation, mixed material behavior, and better judgment.

Advanced stones introduce cost, fragility, optical effects, treatment awareness, and more serious sourcing decisions.

Mastercraft stones demand restraint. At that level, the cutter’s judgment may matter more than the stone itself.

The best stone is not always the rarest, hardest, or most expensive.

The best stone is the one that teaches the next lesson.


Tier 1: Beginner Stones

Beginner stones should teach the fundamentals without punishing every mistake.

At this stage, you are learning how to hold the stone, shape the outline, build the dome, move through grit stages, inspect the surface, and reach a clean polish. The material should support that learning process.

Agate

Agate is one of the best and most popular beginner cabbing stones.

It is a variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. That structure gives agate durability, strong polish potential, and enough hardness for jewelry use. It also comes in a huge range of colors and patterns, which makes it visually rewarding even for simple beginner cabochons.

Common agate varieties include:

Quartz Varieties

For cabbing, quartz can be an excellent choice because it is hard, recognizable, and common. It can also be frustrating if the material has internal fractures, heavy inclusions, or too much transparency for the cutter’s current inspection habits.

Good quartz varieties for beginner-to-early-intermediate cabbing include:

• River quartz

Quartz is harder than some beginner materials, so it teaches pressure control. It also rewards proper polish. Rose quartz and smoky quartz can make beautiful cabochons, especially when cut with a soft dome and clean surface.

Transparent quartz is less forgiving visually because scratches and internal fractures are easier to see. That does not make it bad. It just means the cutter needs better inspection habits.

River Stones

River stones deserve a place in the beginner tier, but you need to be selective.

Not every river stone is good lapidary material. Some are too soft, fractured, porous, crumbly, or unpredictable. But many river stones contain quartz, jasper, agate, chert, or other durable materials that can become beautiful cabochons.

This is one of the most accessible ways to start learning.

A found stone may not have the commercial pedigree of named rough, but it teaches observation, classification, and potential. You learn to look at fracture lines, color, density, weathering, and polish behavior.

Some river stones will fail.

Some will surprise you.

Someone who can turn a common river rock into a clean cabochon is learning the real craft.

Obsidian

Obsidian is volcanic glass.

It is softer than agate or jasper and cuts quickly, which can make it useful for learning tool control. It can also chip, scratch, and fracture more easily, so it needs thoughtful use.

Popular obsidian types include:

Tier 2: Intermediate Stones

Intermediate stones introduce more complexity.

They may be softer, more valuable, more fracture-prone, more pattern-dependent, or more sensitive to heat and polishing technique. They are still approachable, but they ask for better judgment.

This is where the cutter starts moving from:

“Can I make a cabochon?”

to:

“What should this stone become?”

Lapis Lazuli

Lapis lazuli is historically important, visually powerful, and deeply recognizable.

The best lapis has rich blue color, often with golden pyrite and minimal white calcite. It has been used for jewelry, carving, pigment, inlay, and decorative objects for thousands of years.

Lapis is a rock made from multiple minerals, commonly including lazurite, pyrite, and calcite. That mixed structure is part of its beauty, but also part of its challenge.

Lapis can undercut, show uneven polish, or respond differently across the surface depending on the mix of minerals. Too much calcite can make it look pale or patchy. Too much pyrite can affect how the surface behaves under polish.

If you are cutting lapis for resale, quality matters. Strong blue color, balanced pyrite, minimal calcite, and a clean polish all influence buyer confidence.

Lapis teaches mixed-material polishing. It asks the cutter to slow down and pay attention to how different minerals behave inside the same stone.

Labradorite and Spectrolite

Labradorite is one of the best intermediate cabbing stones because it teaches orientation.

The flash, called labradorescence, only appears strongly from certain angles. Cut it correctly, and the stone can show blue, green, gold, orange, or full-spectrum color. Cut it poorly, and it can look dull.

The cutter must study the rough, find the flash, and orient the dome to display the strongest optical effect. Spectrolite, a high-quality variety associated with intense color range, raises the stakes further.

Labradorite is popular when cut well. The flash sells the stone.

Moonstone

Moonstone is a feldspar material that rewards orientation and careful polish.

Its glow, often called adularescence, can look soft, floating, and almost internal. The best cabochons are cut to display that effect cleanly across the dome.

Moonstone is more delicate than agate or jasper. It can cleave, chip, or show surface issues if handled carelessly. It tests pressure control.

Moonstone teaches restraint. Too much force, poor orientation, or careless polishing can quickly reduce what makes the stone beautiful.

Petrified Wood

Petrified wood can cut and polish beautifully when the material is solid.

Fractured or porous material is common and can be frustrating. The pattern is the main reason to cut it. The best cabochons preserve grain, bark-like structure, or cellular texture.

These materials teach finish quality. Their appeal often depends on a clean shape, strong surface, and polish that makes the color feel intentional.

Tier 3: Advanced Stones

From this point forward, mistakes have a real cost.

Advanced stones may be expensive, fragile, heat-sensitive, included, directional, unusually hard, unusually soft, or difficult to polish consistently. They often have stronger market value, which makes them attractive for serious makers.

This is where cabbing begins to overlap with gemology, sourcing, yield strategy, and customer education.

Opal

Opal is one of the most important stones in cabochon culture.

It is also one of the most SEO-relevant stones in the lapidary world because people do not just search “opal.” They search by type, origin, color, pattern, and behavior.

Common opal categories include:

• Boulder opal
• Matrix opal
• Fire opal
• Ethiopian opal

Boulder opal is especially interesting for cabbing because the opal forms with ironstone. The cutter is not just shaping opal. They are balancing opal, host rock, pattern, thickness, and backing. Done well, the ironstone becomes a rich contrasting part of the design.

Ethiopian opal, especially hydrophane material, requires its own care because it can absorb water or oils. That does not make it bad. It means the cutter and buyer both need better education.

If you learn to cut opal well, you can learn to sell opal well.

But opal is not a stone that rewards impatience.

Sapphire and Ruby Cabochons

Sapphire and ruby are in the corundum family. They are hard, durable, and deeply established in the jewelry market.

Most people think of sapphire and ruby as faceted stones, but cabochon sapphires and rubies can be beautiful, valuable, and practical. Not every sapphire rough is optical-grade faceting material. Included, silky, opaque, translucent, or star-producing material may be better suited to cabochons.

Star sapphire and star ruby add another layer. The cutter must orient the stone correctly to center the star across the dome. This requires experience, patience, and careful reading of the rough.

Sapphire and ruby teach durability, precision, and finish quality. They may be tough stones, but a lazy polish does not age gracefully.

Emerald Cabochons

Fine emeralds are valuable, but emerald commonly contains visible inclusions. In faceting, inclusions can reduce transparency and value. In cabochon cutting, certain included or translucent emerald material can still become beautiful jewelry if cut thoughtfully.

Emerald can look rich, ancient, and powerful.

But it requires caution.

It is not as forgiving as sapphire. It may be fractured, treated, oiled, or vulnerable during cutting and setting.

Star garnet is especially relevant to cabbing because the stone must be oriented correctly to display the star. Like star sapphire, the optical effect depends on the cutter’s ability to read the material.

Garnet teaches that one gemstone name can cover a wide range of difficulty. The variety, quality, inclusions, optical effects, and intended use all matter.

Tier 4: Mastercraft Stones

If “the beatings will continue until morale improves” were a category of gemstone, this would be it.

These are materials where the cutter’s judgment matters almost more than the stone itself. This is not just about difficulty. It is about consequence.

They may be rare, expensive, unstable, historically significant, optically demanding, or difficult to replace.

Lightning Ridge Black Opal

Lightning Ridge black opal is one of the most famous and valuable opal categories in the world.

With this stone, every decision has a cost:

• How much potch to remove
• Whether to preserve weight or chase color
• How to orient the face
• How high to build the dome
• How to avoid sand spots
• How to manage thin color bars
• How to protect the finished stone

A beginner can admire Lightning Ridge black opal.

A skilled cutter earns the right to cut it.

Cut it well, and selling it is usually not acproblem.

Queensland Boulder Opal

Queensland boulder opal forms with ironstone, and the host rock is often a contrasting part of the finished stone.

Some pieces show ribbons, veins, pools, or flashes of opal running through dark brown ironstone. Others become dramatic freeforms where the stone looks like a landscape.

The cutter has to decide how to read the rock.

How much ironstone should remain?

How much opal should be exposed?

How can the color be opened without cutting it away?

Important terms include:

• Koroit opal

• Boulder opal freeform

Boulder opal rewards cutters who can see the design inside irregular material. It punishes those who try to force every stone into a standard shape.

Cabochons here are often more organic.

Done well, you should have no issue finding someone who understands the value.

Harlequin Opal

Harlequin opal is a rare pattern with distinct angular blocks or patches of color.

This is not just another marketing phrase. True harlequin pattern is rare and highly prized. It can appear in black opal, crystal opal, and some boulder opal material, but it should never be assumed casually.

Harlequin opal belongs in the mastercraft tier because the cutter’s job is preservation.

The pattern is the value.

Cut away the wrong area, flatten the wrong dome, or orient the stone poorly, and the value can collapse quickly.

Crystal Opal with High Transparency

People often use the word “crystal” casually, but in opal terminology, crystal opal refers to transparent or translucent opal.

Because light passes into the body of the stone, crystal opal can show a vivid, dimensional play-of-color.

Fine crystal opal is demanding because clarity, thickness, color, and transparency all interact. The cutter has to manage depth and polish without losing the optical effect. Too thin, and the stone may lose presence. Too thick, and it may look cloudy or poorly proportioned.

Crystal opal can be breathtaking, but it leaves little room for lazy cutting.

Star Sapphire and Star Ruby

Star sapphire and star ruby belong here when the star is strong, centered, mobile, and visually clean.

Cutting a star stone is not simply rounding the top. The dome has to be shaped and oriented to reveal the asterism properly.

Color-change stones require the cutter to think beyond static appearance. The stone has to be evaluated under multiple lighting conditions. A good cabochon should preserve the strongest body color, transparency or translucency, and color-change effect.
