Volcanic Chalcedony Agate | Polished Collector Stone

Around 28–30 million years ago, volcanic ash swept across what is now Eastern Oregon, settling into shallow basins and riverbeds. Over time those ash layers mixed with fine yellow sands and iron-rich sediment. Silica-rich water later flooded the region, replacing the grains one by one and sealing them inside chalcedony. The result is this ghostly PNW agate—partially translucent, soft in tone, and holding visible remnants of ancient volcanic landscapes.

This teardrop-cut piece shows pale chalcedony banding with suspended yellow particulates and iron-stained inclusions. Under angled light the internal structure sharpens: you can see the trapped sands, tiny ash flecks, and a soft diffusion of color that only appears when the stone tilts. It’s subtle, but unmistakably shaped by the volcanic formations that built the Pacific Northwest’s fossil-rich hills.

Cut and polished by hand, the agate weighs 18.7 grams (about 93.5 carats). It’s shaped for setting, display, or collecting—smooth, balanced, and showing the internal character that makes Oregon agates so distinct. At first glance it seems quiet, but once light catches the bands, the story inside becomes clear.
